The Hemi Matenga Scenic Reserve protects 330-hectare remnant of rainforest. Te Nikau (yellow dot) is located in this forest and ideally placed for exploration.

Three walks – ranging from a half-hour stroll to a half-day hike to the summit of Te Au (just beyond top left corner of photo) – will take you through one of the largest remaining stands of kohekohe forest.

At Te Nikau Forest Retreat you will waken to the dawn chorus of bell like notes from the Tui.
